Optical Test and Characterization Engineer

Full-time · On site, Lausanne

Summary of position

We are building the optical layer that the next generation of AI and quantum infrastructure will run on. Our first product is an optical circuit switch built on a spatial light modulator. As Optical Test and Characterization Engineer, you will make our optical measurements reproducible, traceable and fast enough to guide design. You will build and automate the setups that characterize our devices, from single test structures on the wafer to full optical sub-systems. You will work in Lausanne, next to our process lab, so measurements feed straight back into the next fabrication run. If you like turning a fragile lab experiment into a measurement anyone on the team can trust, you'll fit well here.

What you'll do

  • Setups. Design and build free-space and fiber-based test setups. Own alignment, calibration and instrument control.
  • Optical characterization. Measure phase, reflectance, loss, polarization and spectral response of our photonic devices and arrays.
  • Electro-optical testing. Characterize device response versus voltage, frequency and temperature.
  • Automation. Automate priority measurement workflows so they run with little operator time and can run unattended.
  • Calibration. Build calibration routines and detect drift in wavelength, temperature and bias.
  • Data quality. Record sample, instrument, calibration and software provenance for every run. State uncertainty on every result.
  • Wafer-level testing. Produce wafer and die maps that tell the process team what to change next.
  • AI in the workflow. Use AI tools for analysis, test code and documentation.
  • Cross-team work. Work with process, device design and electronics so tests answer the questions that matter for the product.

What we are looking for

  • Master's degree (or higher) in photonics, physics, optics or a related engineering discipline.
  • Hands-on experience in experimental photonics and optical characterization.
  • Experience building optical setups with free-space and fiber optics.
  • Instrument control and test automation in Python or similar.
  • Solid understanding of measurement uncertainty and calibration.
  • Test code and setups that another operator has used successfully.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, fluent English.
  • Strong problem-solving in novel or ill-defined situations.
  • Comfortable using AI tools across the workflow.

Nice to have

  • Characterization of electro-optic modulators or spatial light modulators.
  • Experience with various photonic cavities.
  • Wafer-level probing of photonic devices.
  • Programmable photonics or phase calibration of optical arrays.
  • Production or reliability test experience.

Compensation

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience.
  • Equity and benefits available, to be agreed upon.
